Lecture: Remove Abortions from the Criminal Code!

As part of the campaign "16 Days Against Violence," Sylvia Groth from the platform for free abortion "Pro Choice Austria" is holding a lecture followed by a discussion.

Tuesday, December 5, 6 PM, Kolingasse 14-16 SR 5

Gender-specific violence against FLINTA* (women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans, and agender people) is still a daily reality worldwide and also in Austria. Restricted access to abortion is a structural form of this gender-specific violence and infringes on the right to bodily autonomy. In Austria, abortions are still included in the criminal code. Although since 1973, there have been regulations allowing abortions within the first 3 months of pregnancy. However, in practice, it is evident that especially those who are mentally ill, impoverished, or overweight are taken less seriously by the medical healthcare system, resulting in the expiration of this time frame often passing quickly. For many years, we have known: the criminalization of abortions does not lead to fewer abortions. Instead, women and FLINTA resort to unsafe, often life-threatening methods. The World Health Organization also recommends decriminalizing abortion to ensure the health and well-being of women.
