Sustainability Weeks

Sustainability Weeks from 24.04. to 07.05.2023

We are in an age of multiple crises - the climate crisis is just one of them. What connects all crises is their origin in capitalism. The current economic system cannot continue as it is. The EU's current climate policy is insufficient and unscientific. A globally conceived, socially just transformation towards a sustainable society is missing. This must resolutely oppose structures of oppression and exploitation such as patriarchy, fascism, racism and neo-colonialism.

As a student body of the University of Vienna we would like to name this grievance and exchange visions of transformation with you and work on it. To this end, we are organizing the Sustainability Weeks from 24.04. to 07.05.2023, which will have a leftist, intersectional and socio-ecological focus.

Awareness Concept

What’s awareness?
Awareness means consciousness and attentiveness. It is about an appreciative interaction with each other and about reducing discriminatory and violent conditions. The goal is to create an atmosphere that allows people to take responsibility for themselves and for each other, that respects personal boundaries and allows everyone to feel safe. Organizers and participants develop an attitude and practice that counteracts discrimination and other violence. It should dismantle structures of inequality and exclusion.

What for?
We actively work to create a non-discriminating and non-violent work and study environment that has no room for any racism, hate against queers, sexism, ableism, ageism, or other discrimination. Hate speech and hurtful behavior have no place with us.

Program

Animal industry as one of the main drivers of global ecological crises and social injustices

Workshop
Time: 5pm - 7pm
Location: UZA II, Althanstraße 14, 1090 Vienna, lecture hall 6
Language: German (translation into English possible)

Chris Rombeck from Umweltbildungswerk

In this interactive workshop I would like to conduct a quiz with you. We want to look at the connections between animal industry and

  • capitalist exploitation structures
  • exploitation of workers
  • famine in the Global South
  • Displacement (land grabbing)
  • Global warming
  • Rainforest clearing
  • extinction of plant and animal species
  • global slaughter numbers
  • Animal ethics

How is the consumption of animal products developing - is it increasing or decreasing? How much space do animals have? What are their living conditions? What could be possible solutions?
We can decide spontaneously in the workshop as a group which topics we will focus on more intensively. In any case, there will be room for discussion.

What is neurodivergence*? What does it have to do with sustainability? Are you also neurodivergent or you have some neurodivergent people in your life who you can sometimes understand more and sometimes less? How to be an ally to neurodivergent people and how to organize movements to be welcoming, accessible and inclusive for neurodivergent people in all our diversity? Join us for the workshop about neurodivergence, sustainability and accessibility - to learn more about what neurodivergence is, to explore your own neurodivergence or try to understand others better, to make your activist practice more inclusive or to meet some more neurodivergent people and share your views and experiences!
_____
*Neurodivergence is a term we use for a wide spectrum of conditions and experiences related to “different” functioning of the nervous system, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia etc.

If you want, you can bring old clothes for them to become another persons new favorite item.

Within the last 10-15 years, the phenomenon "clothing swap party" established and spread rapidly. In most cases, "sustainability" is mentioned as one of the central factors that speak for clothing swap parties. So in recent years, there has been no getting around clothing swap parties in the discourse on sustainability.
However, these have taken on enormous proportions: People swap clothes on a large scale, the exchange value is not the number of pieces but the weight (bring max. 5kg or similar). Many people use these offers possibly to get rid of newly bought clothes in a supposedly sustainable way in order to have room for new clothes. According to this logic, regular clothing swap parties would even fuel the purchase of new products and fast fashion, as there are uncomplicated and particularly many offers to give away clothes that are no longer used in a supposedly sustainable way.
However, this is by no means a conscious use of resources. To exchange clothes and at the same time to serve the logics (faster, better, more) of the capitalist market system does not fit together.
We therefore offer a mindful alternative: Conscious Clothes Gifting
Conscious Clothes Gifting is about conscious and mindful gifting. It's not about the quantity or the number of pieces, but about the individual value of things. We also reject the practice of bartering, as it excludes people who do not have a medium of exchange. We advocate slowness and a conscious examination of the things in question. Questions such as "do I really need this?", "how could I combine this piece of clothing?", "does this top fit my style?" or "to what occasion can I wear it?" can support in not hoarding clothes arbitrarily and without reflection; instead, a conscious and reflected consumption decision is encouraged. The same is true when giving away clothes: rather than donating large quantities of clothing, Conscious Clothes Gifting is more about consciously choosing things that could bring joy to others. In other words, this event is not about disposing of old clothes in poor condition, but rather an opportunity to get new favorite pieces.

Build your own Particulate Matter ("Feinstaub") measuring station!

Workshop
time: 12:00 - 15:00 Uhr
place: meeting room of
 ÖH, Campus Spitalgasse 2, Hof 1, 1.10, 1090 Wien
language: german*englisch

luftdaten.at

The air quality in urban centers is often not as good as it could be or as it's supposed to be. The City of Vienna, for instance, believes that their air quality is "good" based on the data of 17 official measuring stations. But does this really reflect the real situation?

Luftdaten.at is a citizen science project that encourages citizens to do their own measurements. We found out that the situation in certain Vienniese districts is much more grave than the official data suggests. In this hands-on workshop we build our own measuring station that can be easily integrated in the luftdaten.at network and allows you to assess the air quality in your neighborhood - wherever you live. We will also explain which air pollutants exist and what role they play. All parts of the measuring station will be provided on a free donation basis. The current situation in Vienna and other places can be looked up on our live map: https://wien.luftdaten.at luftdaten.at is part of an international network to assess air quality. As you can see on the live map, data is provided for many places around Europe and the World. In addition, we would like to introduce our project "Feinstaub am Uni-Weg" (particulate matter on the way to university): you can borrow portable measuring devices from us to measure the particulate matter pollution you are exposed to on your daily way to university.

How To Build A Social Movement For Marginalized Classes In Austria - A Dialogue With The Global South

Workshop
Time: 4pm - 6pm
Location: Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz 1, 1090 Wien, seminar room 12, 2nd level
Language: german (translation to english or spanish possible)

Juan Gerez

In this participatory workshop, we reflect on a set of political tools for building mass social movements from an intersectional, class, and political ecology perspective. We will also approach the topic from a positioning of the Global South, more specifically from the experience of Latin American militancy.
We will work mainly under the premise of the extent to which it is possible for the Austrian left to build mass social movements in a context of economic-political crisis.

We will also focus on the following areas of tension:
Individual/Subject;
Capital/Labor;
State/Society
Capitalism/identity politics

In this workshop we will mainly use texts by authors* from the Global South with an intersectional approach.

There will be space for discussion and exchange.

Degrowth - A feminist perspective!

Workshop
Time: 7pm - 8.30pm
Place: meeting room of
 ÖH, Campus Spitalgasse 2, Hof 1, 1.10, 1090 Vienna
Language: German
Max. number of participants: 35 persons

Corinna Dengler, PostDoc at Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien

What actually is degrowth and what can it learn from feminist economic and growth critique? Against the background of worsening ecological crises, this lecture introduces debates about degrowth/post-growth and asks for feminist perspectives on these debates. In doing so, it will become clear that intersketional feminisms are not an add-on, but have to be considered from the outset, because there is no automatism that a post-growth society is feminist. Against this background, the question is discussed how a gender-equitable distribution of paid and unpaid work can look like in a post-growth society.

Bling! - Finance Game

Interactive Game
Time: 4pm - 8pm
Location: Kolingasse 14-16, 1090 Vienna, Room PC 1
Language: German (whisper translation to English is possible)
Max. number of participants: 30 persons

Attac Austria
Registration via mail to oekoref@oeh.univie.ac.at

What does it mean for a society when hospitals have to operate for profit? What are the effects of the commercialization of public spaces? Conversely, what consequences could the socialization of private housing companies have?
The simulation game makes it possible to experience the connections between financial markets and everyday life in a playful way. The players spend six years in the fictitious city of BLING. They first draw role cards that determine their starting positions with individual characteristics. Then they try to improve their starting position over six rounds. During the rounds, they have to collect points ("blings") in the areas of housing, social services and health.
Excess points ("Goldblings") can be invested in the financial market or used to buy facilitation cards that make it easier to collect points. There is also the policy area, where decisions are made in each round about possible changes in the law that will have an effect in the further course of the game.

Crocheting

Workshop
Time: 4pm - 7pm
Place: Kolingasse 14-16, 1090, Vienna, PC room 1
Language: English
Max. number of participant: 20 persons

Isabel Sherriffs

Crochet is an art form and craft that has seen a strong revival in the last few years. How to crochet, what crocheting has to do with sustainability, slow fashion and accessibility, and what you can do with crochet – all these questions will be the topic of the crochet workshop on the 4th of May. The workshop requires no prior knowledge, skills or tools – being interested in crocheting wouldn’t hurt, though. Everything you need to crochet will be provided by the ÖH-team! You can come as a complete beginner or intermediary (even as a crochet expert, if you just want to hang out and crochet).

Accessibility: Moderate accessibility (“barrierearm”) – English-language, wheel-chair accessible location. Crochet requires moderate vision and the ability to use hands freely and flexibly.

Systemic campaign planning - reaching the goal dynamically and creatively

Workshop
Time: 16:00 - 19:00 h
Place: Kolingasse 14-16, 1090, Vienna, seminar room 17
Language: German

Heli from Humus

How can we plan campaigns in such a way that they appeal to different target groups, are developed jointly along the way, and address the causes of problems instead of just fighting symptoms? Considerations and methods for modern campaign design are fed by approaches such as Systems Thinking or Human Centered Design and integrate feedback from various stakeholders as early as possible in the planning process. In this crash course we will look at how this can be done - you are welcome to bring your own examples or topics!

There will be no event from the Sustainability Weeks

However:

Upcycling

Workshop
Time: 2pm - 5pm
Place:
meeting room of ÖH, Campus Spitalgasse 2, Hof 1, 1.10, 1090 Vienna
Language: German*English

If you want, you can bring your own materials (e.g. ripped clothes).

Sarah from Kostnix-Laden

Conserving resources by giving existing objects and materials another life. There are already masses of products that are in the capitalist production cycle and are thrown away or stand around unused. Especially for creative minds, this opens up a sea of possibilities to create something new. You can't save the world with this, but set a sign and inspire you and others to deal with the production systems and problems of our society.
Together we will, among other things

  • make garlands from fabric scraps
  • make mobiles out of t-shirt yarn and natural materials
  • embellish holey clothes with "visible mending"

The workshop is also to be understood as an experimental space: bring your own materials or use our material repertoire from the Kostnix store and implement your individual ideas :) Our colorful upcycling workshop should serve as an inspiration for further creative exploration with existing materials and goods.
